In a culture that often emphasizes positivity and promotes “no bad vibes,” it can be easy to find ourselves battling negative emotions like sadness, anger, and frustration. The desire to push these feelings down—whether to avoid discomfort or to not seem like a “Debbie Downer,” might appear to be a good idea at first. However, burying unpleasant emotions can lead to significant harm, both mentally and physically. That’s why it's crucial to acknowledge and address these feelings rather than suppress them.
When we push down negative emotions, they don’t simply disappear and allow us to move on. Instead, they accumulate like steam in a pressure cooker. Over time, this build-up can lead to an explosive release, resulting in sudden outbursts of anger, intense sadness, or even panic attacks. By avoiding our emotions, we miss the opportunity to process them in a healthy way, which can ultimately lead to more intense feelings later on. Furthermore, if we suppress negative emotions, we can often experience a sense of numbness. This isn’t limited to just the feelings we wish to avoid; it extends to positive emotions as well. So by numbing ourselves to negative feelings, we inadvertently impair our ability to fully experience the positive ones.
Avoiding negative emotions can also exacerbate feelings of anxiety and depression. When we push emotions down, we end up engaging in unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance abuse, disordered eating, or compulsive-exercising. Instead of relieving our distress, these behaviors can spiral into deeper issues, creating a cycle that’s hard to break or even a serious mental health disorder.
Research has also shown that suppressed emotions can manifest in physical health conditions. Chronic stress, anxiety, and depression can lead to headaches, gastrointestinal issues, and even more severe conditions like heart disease. The mind and body are closely connected and so our emotional state can significantly influence our physical health.
So, what are we supposed to do? Rather than avoiding negative emotions, we should work towards recognizing and addressing them in a healthy manner. Whether that’s through learning positive coping mechanisms or processing through them with a friend or therapist, there are healthier options for navigating unpleasant feelings.
